Coronavirus – Advice for Business Customers
Despite some misleading reports in the press, we do not think most insurance policies covering the vast majority of businesses both large and small, including our own, will provide any cover allied to business interruption or loss of rent relating to the Coronavirus. To be clear on most policies this cover is not currently being offered going forwards either.
Most policies that cover business interruption or loss of rent are tied to physical damage at your premises, which is not what has happened; some provide cover as a result of closure by a public body allied to certain diseases found at the premises, but the vast majority of those policies list the diseases and COVID -19 as a new disease, is not listed. Some provide denial of access cover but for the same reasons the Covid-19 situation is not covered.
Both Aviva and Allianz have confirmed they do not believe their policies will provide Coronavirus cover, which is our current reading of the situation for 99.9% of businesses.
Moving forward and following significant disruption caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic, insurers have advised that such occurrences are not within the remit of their business policies and, whilst we understand that most customers would wish to include protection against a similar reoccurrence, we are unable to obtain any cover for business interruption or loss of rent arising from pandemic closure, over and above the limited coverage for specified diseases stated in your policy (where applicable)
Given the current uncertainty, we suggest the following practical steps:
- Keep accurate financial records during the time in case of change or in case the UK Government introduces an initiative to recompense or support.
- The Government website also offers advice, is updated regularly and provides information on assistance being offered businesses. Please see the links above.
- Remember to keep us up-to-date on any changes to the way your business is run as a result of the crisis. Such changes are material facts that need to be disclosed to Insurers. If you have any doubts or questions please ask.
- Similarly, please remember to continue to adhere to all policy terms and conditions such as Security Conditions.
- For those who need to work from home, please ensure that you have sufficient insurance cover in place for laptops and equipment.
- Remain vigilant regarding situation updates and heed UK Government and other guidance regarding the health & safety of your employees.

Changed risk information including as a result of Covid-19 – what you should tell us
Insurers have been adopting a flexible approach for properties now empty specifically as a result of the COVID Crisis. This is constantly under review and is subject to change. It is imperative if your property becomes unoccupied that you tell us immediately, so we can check the cover and terms applicable with your specific insurer.
If your business activities or operation have changed as a result of the Covid crisis, please make contact with us so we can ensure, on your behalf, all remains in order.
If you are a non business customer and have motor, home or travel policies with us please remember that it is your responsibility to provide complete and accurate information to insurers when you take out your insurance policy, throughout the life of the policy, and when you renew your insurance. It is important that you ensure that all statements you make on proposal forms, on statements of fact, on claim forms when making claims and on other documents are full and accurate.
Please ensure, therefore, that you advise us immediately if any of the information is incorrect or if there are any changes to your circumstances which may affect your insurance.
